West China, c. 212 x 90 cm, early 19th century. An important “tiger skin” carpet decorated with a sea and mountain design at both ends of the field. This carpet is a forerunner of the Tibetan tiger rugs of the late 19th century, which are characterised by completely abstract designs. All tiger carpets were made for the highest dignitaries and were thus a symbol of power. They were also used for meditation in Tantrist ceremonies. With original cotton edges and corroded brown pile, in good (used) condition. (VP)
