Lot and his Daughters, oil on panel, 102.2 x 77.6 cm, framed

Private collection, Vienna

We are grateful to Luuk Pijl for endorsing the attribution of the present painting to the Flemish artist Jacob de Backer on the basis of a photograph. A written certificate (October 2020) is available.

Pijl writes: “This beautifully preserved painting should be dated around 1580. It is executed by the Antwerp master Jacques de Backer, who was at this time at the peak of his artistic production […] With three main protagonists most masters would have chosen to depict the scene in a horizontal format, but Backer preferred to render the scene in a vertical composition […] The master painted several histories with three main protagonists. A much earlier work is a good example. It concerns an impressive rendition of Susanna and the Elders, which figured in a recent sale in France (Versailles Enchères, 14 June 2020, lot 22). In general the story of Lot has inspired a variety of artists of first rank. The theme of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the subsequent scene of Lot and his daughters were popular subjects in Netherlandish art. The best-known renditions to date are by the likes of Joachim Patinir, Jan Massys and Peter Paul Rubens, and in the North by Masters of Utrecht such as Abraham Bloemaert and Joachim Wtewael.”
