Philippe de Momper

Philippe de Momper - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1598–1634)
A winterlandscape with fishermen bringing in their catch,
oil on panel, 53 x 74.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Philippe de Momper. A written certificate (September 2020) is available.

Ertz writes: ‘The landscapes by Philippe de Momper, son of Josse de Momper the Younger, are strongly influenced by his father, as he is familiar with the latter’s work like no other artist. There can be no doubt that he was trained in his workshop, and he very probably also collaborated with him after his journey to Italy, which he had undertaken in the company of Jan Brueghel the Younger. The differences in the painting style between father and son […] are only briefly outlined in the following:

1. The brushwork is not dynamic and energetic, but loose and quiet; 2. The boats, people, animals, and bare trees are integrated into the entire winter landscape, i.e. into a whole, which in the third decade of the seventeenth century anticipates the future development of Flemish landscape painting;
3. The red colour of the protagonists’ garments stands out, as does the lively hustle and bustle of the fishermen and the thin trees in the background, pushing their naked branches in all directions against the light-coloured background; nothing can be felt in this painting of the tranquillity and equilibrium in his typical, so-called “Treviso landscapes”. Here, the busyness in a harbour prevails, as was probably common at the time when the fishermen returned from their catches;
4. The viewer’s eye moves alongside the motifs, directed from the fishermen unloading their boats full of fish in the foreground to those warming themselves at the fire in front of the ruinous tower in the background;
5. Most of all, the staffage, executed by the author of the landscape himself, also contributes to the impression of a homogeneous winter landscape.’
