Lotto No. 72

Jaroslav Horejc *

Jaroslav Horejc * - Arte moderna

(Prague 1886–1983)
“Pallas Athene”, plastic, plaster, brown patina, signed Horejc, height 50 cm, base slightly bumped

Provenance:
Private Collection, Prague

Athena, the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology and the protector of bravery, was one of Jaroslav Horejc’s favourite subjects. Between 1916 and 1925, several versions of a statue of this goddess were created from different materials and with different attributes, which demonstrate the creativity of Jaroslav Horejc’s sculptural talent. As evidenced by Horejc’s pencil drawing (Jaroslav Horejc (1886 - 1983), Mistr českého art deca, Prague 2017, p. 183), the final work, which was probably based on the offered model, was to be part of an unknown architectural realisation. This variant of the statue, in which the goddess holds a shield in her right hand and a book with an owl sitting on it in her left hand, probably also includes the 80 cm high version made of pear wood, which is now in the collections of the Gallery of the City of Prague.

Literature:
Jaroslav Horejc (1886–1983), Mistr cˇeského art deca, Prague 2017, pp. 36–38 and 182–183.
