Lotto No. 801

An Extremely Rare Late-Renaissance Iron Chest

of round shape with painted coat of arms of the Salzburg prince archbishop Markus Sittikus IV of Hohenems (1574-1619), South German, second half of the 16th century, the cylindrical body in the form of wrought iron bands, detachable lid can be locked by means of a puzzle lock (trick lock), height c. 85 cm, dm. c. 39 cm, signs of age and traces of corrosion, key, burin, lock in working order, signs of age and traces of corrosion. (DOC)

A rare version of an iron chest, which may have served as a container for storing rolls of parchment or sacred documents.

Despite the brief government of Archbishop Markus Sittikus of Hohenems from 1612 to 1619, his services to the archdiocese of Salzburg were of extraordinary importance. It is to his diplomatic skills that Salzburg owes its neutrality in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), which was successfully defended by his successor Paris Lodron. Markus Sittikus is regarded as the builder of the first great sacred building in the northern Alps, Salzburg Cathedral, and as a promoter of Italian Baroque music and theatre culture. Various building projects are associated with his name, the two most important being the Hellbrunn Palace (1613) and Salzburg Cathedral (1614).
