ABENTEUER SAMMELN

Holistic collecting

Passionate art collector, Heinz Ploner, regarded collecting as a holistic experience which should ideally produce what he called a “total soundscape” (Gesamtsound). On his death, a decade ago, at the age of 59, the bulk of his private collection was split up between three Austrian museums: the Belvedere, the Graz Joanneum, and the Albertina. Around 40 of the remaining artworks are coming up for sale in the June auction of contemporary art.
The group of works represents the essence of Heinz Ploner’s collecting activity: Austrian abstract painting since 1960. It contains works by Herbert Brandl, Gunter Damisch, Otto Zitko and Erwin Bohatsch, all of whom were personally known to the Viennese legal and economics expert, Ploner. Establishing close ties with artists was part of the Gesamtsound of collecting art, which for Ploner went way beyond mere discovery or possession. Ploner latterly expanded his collecting practice to embrace paintings experimenting with new media, represented in the auction by works created by Markus Huemer and Lois Renner.
