Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Antiquariato - Parte 1

Azumabashi Kinryuzan enbo sheet 39 from the "Meisho Edo hyakkei" series (Hundred Views of Edo), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Uoya Eikichi (publisher's seal half visible at left margin), dated 1857 (Ansei 4, month 8), censor seal aratame snake 8 (missing from the present sheet because it is trimmed along the border lines at three sides). The present sheet is probably an early print, since the title cartouche is three-coloured, the wood grain is twice very clearly visible in the sky above and in the water below, and, compared with the sheet from the Waseda Theatre Museum Tokyo, no. 201-1390, it shows the same two blank areas at the same place below in the darkness of the plank near the water. Two losses due to printing process (one in the sky above and one in the horizontal bar of the boat), a slightly stained and yellowed, album holes to the right and left margins. A pleasure boat cuts runs the sheet almost diagonally. A geisha is probably on her way to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. The scene is centred by means of the pagoda in the middle ground. Next to it is the main building of the most important temple in the Asakusa district, the Kinryuzan (Temple of the Golden Dragon), (see Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler, Meisho Edo hyakkei, Munich 2011, p. 252), 33.4 x 23.4 cm, framed,(CT)
