A fine Korwar protective amulet.
West Papua. Around 1900. Wood. 15 cm. A broad stick with a small ancestor figure holding a stylized shield. Relative to the body, the head of the figure is characteristically large. Small wood chips, carved from these amulets were sometimes used for strength and medicinal purposes as some of the wood contained Quinine against malaria. With a deep old patina from intensive use.
