Around 1840 Ender travelled to Styria and the Tyrol, where he visited the Pinzgau and Zillertal region in 1841 on the request of his patron Archduke Johann.
Charcoal kilns are piles of wood covered with turf or moistened clay. These piles were set on fire in order to produce the light weight residue. Its manner of production goes back to ancient times and in modern times it became an important economic branch. Charcoal was once the only fuel which provided enough heat for iron smelting. As soon as a new procedure was developed at the beginning of the 18th century in order to gain coke from black coal, which suited the usage in the furnace better, the significance of charcoal faded. The production of charcoal became increasingly expensive and its usage diminished even though the production of iron increased. At the beginning of the 19th century the production of charcoal came to its end.
