Cornelis Huysmans
(Antwerp 1648–1727 Mechelen)
A wooded landscape with peasants and their cattle,
oil on canvas, 141.5 x 226 cm, framed
Provenance:
Aristocratic collection, Germany
Cornelis Huysmans executed his hilly wooded landscapes with a view into the distance under the influence of his teacher Jacques d’Arthois in Brussels. Huysmans probably studied under the Antwerp landscape painter Gaspar de Witte or his half-brother Peter. Huysmans’s paintings are comparable to the landscapes of Lodewijk de Vadder and Adriaen Frans Boudewijns, which are also rendered with typically strong contrasts of light.
