While the West used to have total supremacy over art, Alighiero Boetti brought a thoroughly Eastern contribution to contemporary art, stripping it of all its superstructures. His small canvases with letters embroidered by Afghan women express simple, colourful, immediate thoughts and concepts. And there is much more behind it. There is the story of Boetti who went back to Afghanistan twice a year (also reaching Peshawar in Pakistan until the 1979 war), stayed in touch with the embroiderers, and took care of their working conditions, making sure they were not children. Ethics intertwined with pure art, a simplicity that was so dear to the artist. […]

Boetti means impact - simple, basic phrases that bring to light an art made by ordinary women who wisely carry on their traditions with all their little mistakes and imperfections. Alighiero Boetti‘s line of thought expresses universal concepts that move the viewer with bursting colours.
