A Bidjogo Aquatic Mask
Bissagos Islands, wood, polychrome, fibres, 67 cm high. A fine 'Swordfish' mask, originally worn on top of the head. The Bidjogo live on the Bissagos Islands in the state of Guinea-Bissau, off the west coast of Africa. They have a large collection of masks boasting many animal masks. For the initiation ceremonies, the men wore different aquatic masks;
the most important, like this swordfish, were reserved for the strongest members.
