Joseph Lauer studied at the Viennese Academy with professors Sebastian Wegmayr (1776-1857), Josef Mössmer (1780-1845), Thomas Ender (1793-1850) and Franz Steinfeld (1787-1868). Lauer, one of the last renowned flower painters of Biedermeier and post-March Vienna, continued the use of bold colours of the school of Viennese painter Johann Baptist Drechsler (1756-1811) in his numerous works in oil and watercolour. He often placed his flower and fruit arrangements against a landscape background, which he animated with birds or butterflies. His paintings were on display at the exhibitions of the Academy from 1840 and the Kunstverein from 1851.
