Munich School, 19th Century
The Feast of Gambrinus, oil on canvas, 140 x 245 cm, strip frame
Provenance:
European Private Collection.
Surrounded by jugglers, musicians, and a cheerful entourage, Gambrinus is enthroned in the centre on a beer barrel. According to legend, he, supposedly King of Brabant, was the inventor of beer brewing and is often depicted in literature and the visual arts as the counterpart to Bacchus, the god of wine. He cheerfully raises his glass in greeting, while hard-working assistants distribute the hop juice to the party in large tankards.
