Oskar Kokoschka*

(Pöchlarn 1886–1980 Villeneuve)
Standing Girl with Arms Crossed Behind Head, c. 1924, signed O. Kokoschka with dedication "für das Stammbuch des Herrn Gorgei Schönberg", pencil on lined tracing paper, 20 x 11 cm

Catalogue and Exhibition:
Rupert Feuchtmüller, Unbekanntes von OK, Galerie Würthle, Vienna 1984, cat. no. 19, ill.

"The standing pose with its seemingly defiant posture is powerfully dominated almost entirely by vertical strokes. The horizontal lines create tension and spatial differentiation. The plasticity of the figure is enormously enhanced by the distribution of light and shadow—a resolute psychological expression clearly emerges in posture and gaze. The symbolic, almost abstract quality of the rendering is far from a mere depiction and yet creates an image that is true—a piece of life in the artistic sense."
Georg Schönberg was the son of composer Arnold Schönberg. The man known as Gorgei was 18 years old during Kokoschka’s first visit to the Schönberg household on 16 March 1924. The drawing may possibly be connected to this visit. (cf. Feuchtmüller, 1984)
