In summer 1913, Alma Mahler began building her country house in Breitenstein near Semmering, where Oskar Kokoschka stayed for an extended visit. The unique atmosphere and picturesque location inspired the artist to create seven quick sketches, including the present work, which remained in Alma Mahler’s collection until her death.
