Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel *

(Wunsiedel 1881–1965 Vienna)
‘Hercegovina’ (bridge in Mostar), signed and dated L. H. Jungnickel 1913, mixed technique on paper laid down on cardboard, 49,5 x 52 cm, (K)

See:
Ilse Spielvogel-Bodo, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Verlag Johannes Heyn, 2000, pages 152 and 153 (ill. of a variant), 154 (ill. of the etching), 277 (ill. of the oil painting)

In 1913/14, the artist preoccupied himself with major pictorial themes, which he executed in part in mixed media and a variety of compositions. A famous example of this was the gouache, Donkey caravan in Mostar of 1913. The predominant element in this dense, busy composition is the old stone bridge in the small town of Mostar, which had stood for countless generations over the waters of the River Narenta (Neretwa). It is well known that the historic 16th-century structure was destroyed in 1993 during fighting between Croats and Muslims, although the intention is to reconstruct it as a World Heritage site. A caravan moves clockwise through Jungnickel’s image; a palm tree to the right reminding one vaguely of the jungle wallpaper designs produced by the artist. The river flows at an angle through the picture and its route is lined by rocks. The scene is populated by numerous indigenous figures in traditional costumes with fez and opanak. The motig also features depictions of haarems, beggars and thiefs in a series of fairytale stories... op. cit
