Lot No. 629

Alois Heinrich Priechenfried

(Vienna 1867–1953)
A Rabbi, signed (in ligature) AH Priechenfried, oil on panel, 34 x 44.5 cm, framed

Alois Heinrich Priechenfried learnt to gild in his father's business from the age of 14. He expanded his artistic training as Christian Griepenkerl’s visiting student at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1884 to 85. Priechenfried lived in Vienna until his death with the exception of a few longer sojourns in Munich. He became known primarily for his numerous portraits of rabbis. He generally depicted the Jewish scholars reading with a book in their hands; they wear either a circular kippah or the shtreimel, a headdress decorated with brown sable fur. In some cases, the artist added Hebrew characters to the background of his works. In the present lot, as in numerous other of Priechenfried’s paintings, the rabbi is wearing a tallit. This traditional rectangular cloth is white or cream in colour and has dark stripes running through it. The rabbi portrayed here is depicted in front of plain furniture studying the Torah or the Talmud. Alois Priechenfried attached great importance to the realistic depiction of the sitter’s deeply furrowed face framed by his sidelocks, which testifies to his great age.
