Ion Andreescu

A Herd of Cattle in a Meadow, signed Andreescu, oil on canvas, 10.2 x 17 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection.

Ion Andreescu attended Theodor Aman’s National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Influenced by Nicolae Grigorescu, he moved to Paris, enrolled at the Académie Julian, and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon. He moved to Barbizon where he practiced plein-air painting alongside renowned artists such as Jean-François Millet and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot.
He returned to Romania in 1881 where he died from tuberculosis in 1882. He was posthumously elected a member of the Romanian Academy in 1948.
