Yoruba, Nigeria: a single male twin figure, known as ‘ibeji’. With a necklace, and chains of glass beads on both arms. Style: Kisi, Oyo.
A male ‘Ibeji’ twin figure from south-west Nigeria (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 64).
This ‘ibeji’ figure wears a tall ‘hunter’s cap’, decorated in relief and coloured blue by means of ‘bluing’ (‘Reckitt’s Blue’). On head, body and plinth are remains of sacrificial offerings by means of powdered redwood. An inserted metal pupil is visible in the right eye (the other is missing). Typical tribal decorative scars on the forehead and both cheeks, as well as an ear shape typical of this style. On the outside, the round plinth features chip-carving patterns in lozenge shapes. An age-related crack to the body on the front, and one to the plinth at the back. A minimal break to the ‘hunter’s cap’ at the top. Good, shiny usage patina.
Height: 28.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Viennese private collection.
Lit.: ‘Ibeji. The Cult of Yoruba Twins’ by George Chemeche, ill. 41, 42.
