Senufo, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a small, standing female figure of the Senufo people, called ‘tugubele’.
Such relatively small figures are employed by the soothsayers of the Senufo people as ‘helpers’ during their oracles and prophecies. Carved from hard wood in typical Senufo form and dyed dark brown. A slight, age-related crack on the right side of the head, and a small crack on the round base. Otherwise no damage. Good colour scuffing on exposed areas as a result of protracted use.
Height: 26 cm. First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
