Burma (Myanmar): a sitting wooden Buddha, dyed black, with a large winged crown and a vessel containing the ‘elixir of eternal life’. Style: Shan or Ava.
Burma (Myanmar): a sitting wooden Buddha, dyed black, with a large winged crown and a vessel containing the ‘elixir of eternal life’. Style: Shan or Ava.
A so-called ‘medicine Buddha’ carved from hard wood, richly decorated, accentuated with red lacquer and entirely painted over with black lacquer. Buddha sits in the ‘earth-touching gesture’ (‘Bhumisparsa Mudra') on a two-step, lotus flower plinth. In his left hand he holds a vessel containing the ‘elixir of eternal life’. In this representation Buddha wears a very large and lavishly decorated winged crown. His large ear lobe plugs are clearly indicative of the Shan or Ava style. The whole figure, including the plinth, is covered with a Thayo technique decoration. The Burmese Thayo technique is achieved by mixing lacquer with wood ash and then using the mixture to roll thin strands. These strands are then stuck onto the sculpture in a decorative manner and painted over. The plinth is hollowed out from behind. This highly decorative Buddha displays, apart from two minimal cracks on the ear plugs and colour scuffing in places, no significant damage and a good, partly shiny patina.
Height: 65 cm; width: 27 cm.
