Indonesia, Sumatra: a very old sword from Sumatra (Aceh or Batak), with sheath and a hilt made of horn ending in a ‘Makara head’.

Indonesia, Sumatra: a very old sword from Sumatra (Aceh or Batak), with sheath and a hilt made of horn ending in a ‘Makara head’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

An old sword from Sumatra, with a long, straight and single-edged blade, tapering towards the hilt. The slightly curved hilt is carved of dark brown water buffalo horn and terminates in a head of the sea monster ‘Makara’, a composite being from Hindu mythology (possessing an elephant trunk, a predator's mouth etc.). The ‘Makara head' is decorated accordingly with floral and leaf tendrils in relief. The bivalve sheath is made of wood and ends at the hilt with the outline of a ‘Makara head’, which here, however, features only floral reliefs. Two fastening eyelets carved from the same piece and florally decorated sit on the long and visibly very old sheath. The two sheath compartments are held together by 5 strips of tortoiseshell. A piece with very good, old usage patina. Due to age, the blade has light rust spotting and minimal cracks on the hilt and sheath. Otherwise no damage! Length: 75 cm (in total). 19th century to early 20th century. (ME)
