Songye, Dem. Rep. of Congo: An impressive powerful mask of the ‘Kifwebe’ type.

Songye, Dem. Rep. of Congo: An impressive powerful mask of the ‘Kifwebe’ type. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

The 'Kifwebe' mask-type belongs to the 'Bwadi-Bwa Kifwebe’ male secret society of the Songye, in southeastern Congo. There, ‘Kifwebe masks' characteristically appear in full body costumes at initiations, funerals and at police functions.
This mask is an example of the female type. Male ‘Kifwebe-masks’ have a tall comb in the apex. The mask is carved from relatively lightweight, light-coloured wood and partially dyed red. As is the case with this particular mask, what distinguishes such Songye ‘Kifwebe-masks’ is the design of the outer upper surface with its fine, expertly drawn, thin geometrical relief lines. The result is that these typical lines produce an interesting pattern which is not the same on all surfaces. The wider line of the apex is black in colour and continues into a short, wide nose. The big, slitted eyes are black and pulled sharply downwards. Black are also the bands on both temples. The typical protruding, rectangular mouth is dyed red, as is also the tip of the nose. Remnants of earlier white colouring (with kaolin) are detectable in many grooves, as is also red colouring on the chin (through use of powdered redwood).
Overall an old piece in perfect condition, no substantive damage, some colour scuffed edge lightly chipped as a result of protracted use. A very good, in parts shiny patina on the front and back. Height: 38 cm, 19th century to the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
