Dogon, Mali: an old horseman sculpture, made from cast brass, with horse, spear, saddle and saddle bags.
Dogon, Mali: an old horseman sculpture, made from cast brass, with horse, spear, saddle and saddle bags.
The rider (a hunter?) with a goatee and cap, holds a spear in his left hand. He holds the reins of his horse in his right hand and has a quiver on his back. The elegant and long-legged horse wears a bridle, a protective amulet around his neck, a saddle and a saddle bag on each side.
The beautiful horseman sculpture is made of yellow cast-alloy (brass) in a ‘waste mould’ and has an almost black patina due to age. It also displays some residual sand (an archaeological find?). No damage. Height: 23 cm; width: 4 cm; length: 21 cm. About 1900 or earlier.
Provenance:
According to information supplied by the consigner, the present horseman figure comes from his grandfather, who was in the French Foreign Legion in the first third of the 20th century and brought this item back from Africa. Currently: Austria private collection.
