This particular (7 rings) version of the Arabian dagger, with this special type of hilt, typical of both Oman and the south of Yemen (in Hadramaut). The present 'Khanjar' has a typical, slightly curved blade with a middle ridge on both sides. Other aspects of the object’s execution are also remarkable: the hilt and sheath carry not just the usual embellishments of flat, quality silver plates, ornamental and filigree silver bands, but also seven silver rings wound tightly around over the sheath’s green velvet. Moreover, this curved dagger is ornately and expensively decorated (in the upper front part of the hilt and at the front of the sheath) with semi-spheres and small lozenges of pure gold as well as with embedded bits of chased gold sheet. The finishing cap at the lower end of the sheath is, likewise, plated with gold at the front and chased with circles and floral scrolls. Legible on the silver backside of this cap is the silversmith’ chased and framed signature in Arabic script. The brown leather at the back of this extraordinary curved dagger evinces good patina as a consequence of the protracted use made of the object. No damage. L: 31 cm, W: 23 cm.
