A celadon jade table screen
China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period
To the obverse, a carved relief depicting a luohan seated under a tree before a cave on a rock surrounded by water; he reads a book and traces the script with the outstretched index finger of his right hand. In the crook of his arm, he holds a staff, his sandals before him on the rock. The relief encompasses three of the four edges of the screen. To the reverse, a hymn to the luohan engraved in clerical script, decorated in gilt-coloured paint. The last two lines read, “Yu zhi Luohan zan, chen Du Yulin jing shu” and are accompanied by two seals for chen and Yulin, "Imperial hymn to a luohan, reverently inscribed by the subject, Du Yulin (? - 1786)", the seals reading subject and Yulin. A few minor chips and losses, traces of use. 12 x 15.3 x approx. 1.5 cm. The wooden stand damaged and of a later date. (BA)
