Johann Heinrich Ramberg

We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan for identifying the artist. He writes: “I consider this sweepingly painted composition that still reverberates the lightness of the Rococo an autograph work by Johann Heinrich Ramberg, who was born in Hanover in 1763 and died there in 1840.”
In 1781, Ramberg took up his studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, having received an invitation from George III after the latter had seen some of the artist’s drawings done during one of his journeys. After his education in London, where he had studied under Reynolds and Benjamin West, he embarked on an extensive journey across Europe. He sojourned in Prague and Vienna, where he received portrait commissions from the nobility and bourgeoisie. In 1793, Ramberg was appointed “royal court and cabinet painter” in Hanover. His work combines influences coming from English portraiture and features of German Neo-Classicism. The present painting may be compared to Ramberg’s portrait of Wilhelmina of Hake in the Manor of Ohr near Hamelin.
