A pair of “Origami” side tables, designed by Studio Barberini & Gunnel, - Design

Italy, 2011, extra clear crystal glass, white lacquered plywood drawer, incised signature and numbered: barberini & gunnel 3/12 and 4/12, height 55 cm, width 55 cm, depth 40 cm. (DRAX)

Nos. 3 and 4 from the limited edition of twelve.

“The inspiration for ‘Origami’ springs from the close observation of a simple sheet of paper that, when folded several times according to an ancient Japanese technique, turns into complex, delicate figures of intrinsic beauty: origami. The idea is based on the notion of the resilience of glass and its impression of lightness, with the intention of exposing the similarities between origami and glassmaking by appropriating the magical transparency of glass. In fact, paper, with its perceptible lightness and visual opacity, and glass, with its physical heaviness and transparency, represent opposite qualities, and yet they share a distinctive attribute: the idea of lightness.” (Barberini & Gunnel)
