Oceania, New Guinea, Huon Gulf, Tami Islands: A large food bowl with two ancestor figures and crocodiles.
A large food bowl made of hard, reddish brown wood. In ‘classic’, deep, pointed oval shape. On each of the external sides of the present Tami bowl, one ancestor figure with open arms appears in the middle of the upper edge. It is carved in relief, in the typical style of the Huon Gulf, and is flanked by two stylised crocodiles on either side.
The bottom, too, displays two animal heads in relief facing each other (probably crocodiles) on its external side. A magnificent example of Tami bowl, with visible usage patina on the inside and outside as well as on the bottom. Remains of an originally white accentuation in the lines of the relief. A small loss to the upper margin. First third of the 20th century; L: 65 cm, W: 34 cm, H 15 cm. (ME)
Provenance: German private collection.
Lit.: ‘Melanesien. Schwarze Inseln der Südsee’, catalogue Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum Cologne, ill. 250; ‘Ozeanische Kunst’ by Anthony J. P. Meyer, ill. 165.
