Jacob Alt

(Frankfurt / Main 1789-1872 Vienna) and possibly in cooperation with Rudolf von Alt (Vienna 1812-1905) Rome seen from the Passegiata Margerita, dated 3. Juni 1835 on the reverse and with a caption: "Rome vom nördlichen Thore des Janiculus (Gianicolo) aus, Jakob Alt 1835, rechts oben die Acqua Paola, links vor ihr S. Pietro in Montorio, ganz links Capitolsthurm und Aracoeli" (Rome seen from the northern gate of the Gianicolo, at upper right Acqua Paola, at its left S. Pietro in Montorio, at the far left the tower of the Capitol and Aracoeli), signed and dated J. Alt 1835, watercolor on paper, 26,5 x 45 cm, a paper strip addes at the right and lower margin, mounted, framed, (Hu)

In spring 1835 Jacob Alt travelled with his son Rudolf to Italy by order of Emperor Ferdinand I., where both worked on the socalled Guckkastenseries. Father and son must have experienced a high rise. Rudolf produced the best works at this time and in one of his numerous styles; for Jacob the development meant a climax in his work. Both artists could not get freer and more painterly. These are works when father and son became closest in their collaboration ... the mere veduta becomes a township landscape...notwithstanding the real authorship all works bear the signature of Jacob Alt. See Marie-Luise Sternath, Rudolf von Alt, Exhibition catalogue Albertina, Vienna 2005, p. 121f.)
