The present painting relates to the canvas with the same composition in Buenos Aires, Museo de Bellas Artes, attributed to Luca Giordano by Ferdinando Bologna (see S. Causa, Quel che resta di un capolavoro di Giordano, in: Kronos, no. 9, 2005, p. 87, ill. 22, p. 93). Numerous versions with variations on the same subject were painted by Giordano, inspired by a prototype by Ribera, currently in Madrid (Prado).
We are grateful to Professor Riccardo Lattuada for suggesting an attribution to Luca Giordano (Naples 1634-1705) with possible workshop assistance for the present painting. Lattuada suggests that a full attribution to Luca Giordano may be confirmed after the present painting is cleaned.
