Johann Joachim Kändler produced 23 monkeys circa 1747, reworking them circa 1765 at Meissen with the model maker, Peter Reinicke. The Saxon satirical poet, Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener, 1714–1771, mentioned this fable in 1745 in his ‘Abhandlung von Buchdruckerstöcken’. Whether the gifted J. J. Kändler, 1706–1775, used this tale, or engravings or the painting as the models for his Monkey Ensemble, or whether he just wished to caricature courtly life, has not survived for posterity.
