Bini, Nigeria: A white, old ‘Azigho mask’ with two short horns.
Bini is the name of the population living all around the old, famous royal city Benin. Among the Bini people an important role is played by the ‘Ekpo’ society, which takes care of the well-being and the problems of the village. On the occasion of dance ceremonies of the ‘Ekpo’ society, its members perform with ‘Azigho masks’. The present, relatively small mask has a typical form: with large eyes, small, protruding mouth and two horns above the forehead. The white colouring of the face is also characteristic of this mask type. With good, old usage patina on the front and on the back, as well as with minor age damage (colour scuffed, minor pieces broken off). First third of the 20th century; H: 27 cm. (ME)
