Chinese embroidery,
Qing Dynasty, c. 170 x 59 cm, (179x 67 cm incl. frame), 18th century museum-quality silk embroidery manufactured with gold threads on grey-green ground, this very rare piece was used as a cover for the backrest and seat padding of a Chinese hardwood chair, on the basis of the kinks and tears in the fabric it is possible to discern its original arrangement with precision: the crane, symbolising long life, with red feather crown and a twig in its beak, was positioned all along the back rest, the upper section with Fu symbol was folded on the back, the peony flowers with four foliate dragons as corner spandrels were depicted on the seat, the lower end with the Qilin (a good-natured mythical creature) hung down from the chair pad, notwithstanding the aforementioned damage to the ground of the embroidery, the present piece is in very good condition with well-preserved colours, framed with embroidered border, additionally lined entirely with cloth, framed in wood behind glass.
