Alluding to the formal circumstances such as the social situation in New York, the city in which Newman was active as an artist and politician, he exhibits a cubist study of proportions with small cardboard boxes, painted white (... ill. 349) and two works with large, untreated cardboard boxes of American dimensions, placed in relationship with one another (... ill. 348, 350).
(In 1998 similar works with cardboard boxes in European dimensions would be exhibited at the Gallery Meyer Kainer in Vienna, cf. p. 184.) These works suggest associations with New York’s skyline, just as they make us think of the cardboard boxes in which homeless people live in public spaces…
