Lucas van Uden
(Antwerp 1595–1672/73)
View over a wide landscape (in the area near Brussels?), groups of peasant figures in the foreground,
oil on canvas, 138.9 x 206.5 cm, framed
In 1626/27 (after allegedly receiving his training from Peter Paul Rubens, although this is not supported by any documentary sources) Lucas van Uden became master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Alongside Jan Wildens, he is regarded as the most important Flemish landscape painter among Rubens’ contemporaries. His wide panorama landscapes, as is also the case in the present painting, reveal the influence of Joost de Momper II and particularly of Rubens.
