Duke Wilhelm Heinrich von Sachsen-Eisenach was a son of Duke Johann Wilhelm and Princess Amalia von Nassau-Dietz. His marriages to Princess Albertine Juliane von Nassau-Idstein (1713) and Marquess Anna Sophie Charlotte von Brandenburg-Schwedt (1723) remained childless. His inheritance was left to the dukes of Sachsen-Weimar. Portrait painter Christian Schilbach produced numerous works for the Saxon dukes and for the House of Schönborn in Franken. A very similar portrait, also painted on a bombé copper plate, which came to be seen as a speciality of Schillbach’s, of Mainz Prince Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn, is located in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. Another comparable portrait of Duke Johann Wilhelm von Sachsen-Eisenach is in the Friedenstein palace museum in Gotha.
