Mag. Stefan Kobel, author of the master’s thesis Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Der Maler als Gesamtkunstwerk, 1997, comments on Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach’s inscription: “I believe that the painting itself is largely his own work. The manner of painting is certainly consistent with Karl Wilhelm’s style. It is clear that even a nine year old of exceptional talent is unlikely to be able to achieve this quality of painting himself, as well as imitating his father so precisely. Lucidus probably applied the base coat or painted the dark background, possibly a few of the details. This would be in accordance with the general practice in Diefenbach’s studio, in which many, even most, of the paintings are the product of more than one hand. Seen in this light, the inscription should be regarded as a loving gesture to his son. This also corresponds with the educational approach which Diefenbach propagated, that of offering children special encouragement.
