The so-called Sand Pictures date from the second half of the decade. They are flat reliefs made from a mixture of coarsely grained sand, frequently dyed, and synthetic binder, which is then spread onto a wooden board or masonite. Various symbols are impressed into the rough surface of the relief, which is reminiscent of masonry. These signs have diverse origins; their losses and irregular outlines seem to be the result of coincidence; the traces carved into the wet sand with a finger and the impressed indentations reveal similarities to the gestural paintings done at the same time, while the compositions may also contain calligraphic elements. Therefore, at first glance, these works resemble subversive graffiti whose anonymous traces interfere with appropriated public areas. ...
