Franz von Stuck

Franz von Stuck - Moderní

(Teltenweis 1863–1928 Tetschen) Young faun, 1902, signed Franz Stuck, oil on canvas, 56.5 x 46 cm, original frame, (PS)

Provenance:
Private Ownership (Ostini) J. P. Schneider, Frankfurt (old label)
Private Ownership, Germany

Literature:
Heinrich Voss, Franz von Stuck 1863–1928, Werkkatalog der Gemälde mit einer Einführung in seinen Symbolismus, Munich 1973, S. 285, no. 246/229 (ill.)

In terms of his artistic practice, Franz von Stuck took the lead from Holbein the Younger, Lenbach and, above all, from Böcklin, whose bucolic scenes he frequently borrowed in his own work. The Young faun with wine is an exception in Stuck’s oeuvre due to its cheerful nature. The young faun sits and beams as he plays with grapes in a meadow full of daisies. A bright summer sky is depicted to his rear. His short, hairy wolf’s legs, shown surrounded by grapes, permit us to identify him as a faun taken from ancient Italian mythology, who was the god of the open countryside and protector of peasants and shepherds, their flocks and fields.
