Archduke Maximilian Joseph of Austria-Este trained at the Theresian Military Academy and was considered to be a specialist in fortifications and artillery. However, his initiative of developing fortifications within the Empire was only made a reality in Linz. Maximilian Joseph joined the Teutonic Order, where he rose to the rank of Grand Master. This painting depicts the Archduke with the insignia of the Deutschen Orden. A painting very similar in terms of execution can be found in the Regional Museum of Upper Austria.
