We are grateful to Drs Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, who has confirmed the painting to be the authentic work of Jan Steen, executed circa 1649/50.
Provenance: formerly in the ownership of the kings of Hanover, then at the estate gallery of the Dukes of Cumberland; Ernst August, Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg; Auktion Lepke, Berlin, 27.04.1926, lot 155; Belgian private collection.

Hofstede de Groot, Beschreibendes und kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. I, Esslingen/Paris 1908, p. 140, no. 583b; K. Braun, Alle tot nu bekende schilderijen van Jan Steen, Rotterdam 1980, p. 153, no. A 383. Fred Meijer compares the present painting from the ownership of the Welf family with a picture dated 1651 in a private collection in The Hague and with a work by Steen auctioned at Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, on 07.05.2008 as lot 45.
