The present painting formed part of one of the most important European art collections in, the Old Master picture gallery in Dresden. The lacquer seal on the back is of a type that was very often used for paintings sold by the royal household between 1859 to 1862.
The present picture shows the continuing influence of Rembrandt on his mature career. This characterful study of an old man displays the tonal qualities and incisive psychology that Paudiss would have been able to observe in Rembrandt’s workshop. The present painting was not intended to represent a real person, but is a character study, a so-called tronie’. A tronie shows an exaggerated facial expression or a stock character in costume.
