An important Songye Bellow, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Wood, 68 cm. These great abstract bellows are rarely carved with a stylized head. This elegant ironsmith's forgers bellow has four chambers that would have been covered with a loose diaphragm of skin. These would be pumped with a long stick by an assistant to push the air into the charcoal, through clay tubes. Clear indication of use, a small lower section with burn marks.
