A rocking cart, designed by Hans Brockhage in 1950
for Siegfried Lenz, Berggießhübel/Pirna, Germany, solid and laminated beech, lacquered wheels, rubber, height approx. 37 cm, height of seat approx. 22 cm, width approx. 100 cm, depth approx. 37 cm. (MHA)
Can be used as a cart and, when turned upside down, as a rocker. The design was developed in a seminar led by Mart Stam at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. It is said that Stam, referring to the conventional design of a rocking horse, pointed out: “If horse topples over, horse is dead. You must make horse that is not dead when toppling over.” Brockhage made this design in response to that statement. In 1957 the Ulm Art Academy honoured him with the ‘Spielgut’ Award. Moreover, he received the GDR National Design Award in 1983.
