The present painting may be one of Dirck Verhaert’s masterpieces. The artist is first and foremost known for his Italianate landscapes, most of which are river landscapes and views of seaports. Presumably, the painting is a commissioned work and seems to date from Verhaert’s early years. In 1631 the artist was mentioned as a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in The Hague, where he stayed until 1637.
