Cephalus and Procris,
oil on canvas, 91 x 70.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium
The origin of the story of Cephalus and Procris lies in Greek mythology. However, as many as six different accounts exist. The Roman poet Ovid gives us one account in his book The Art of Love. The tale is a caution against credulity. While hunting, Cephalus gets hot and sweety and asks the God of Wind Zephyr for a cool breeze. A witness overhears this request and believes it was made to a woman. The wife of Cephalus, Procris was informed and she believed her husband to be having an affair. Furiously she crept through the bushes towards Cephalus. She soon realized that there was no affair but it was too late. The hunter, hearing rustling of foliage, fired an arrow accidentally killing Procris.
