a large allegorical group depicting the maritime goddess Amphitrite seated in a shell-shaped wagon, wearing crown on her head and holding a sceptre in her left hand, as well as pearl necklaces and a pearl bracelet with precious stones, she is holding in her right hand a flying purple sailcloth arched above her with three floating amorettes, these are holding a laurel wreath and shell, white coral chain and red coral branches in their hands, at the side there is a nixen with coral branches in her left hand and reins of the dolphin in her right hand, on each side in front one nereide, one is wearing a light purple hairband, the other a light blue band, she is holding a shell, white pearl chain and foliage in her left hand, followed by Glaucos the protector of Amphitrite, green and white wave plinth with dolphins, Triton blowing the conch horn and Amor, shells, snailhouse, turtle and Triton boy with coral branch in his left hand, porcelain, colour and gold painted, three parts loosely attached and numbered, golden scepter fixed, trefoil plinth with gold edges, light purple crossed bands, gold, turquoise and light purple heightened shell and acanthus relief, flat reverse side, colour and gold painted, height 48 cm, length 58 cm, minor restorations

This allegorical group was part of the 'large Russian order' by Tsarina Catherine II for the large Palais in Oranienbaum near St Petersburg.

'Since the time of Peter the Great, the Russian fleet was systematically expanded into a military instrument of power, which was first successfully launched outside of the Baltic Sea under Catherine the Great, 1729-1796, in the war against the Ottoman Empire. The first group designed by Kändler 'Triumphant Sea Goddess Amphitrite' therefore includes references to the Tsarina as ruler of the seas. Other than usual, Amphitrite is wearing a crown on her head and holding a sceptre in her hand, identifying the goddess as monarch. Sea goddess Amphitrite was followed in February 1773 by her 'companion Neptune with model number 1';
