Indonesia. 19th century or earlier. Ironwood. 124 cm. A large kneeling figure, the head carrying a crown that is decorated with a stylized Aso (dog) and foliate motifs. These large ancestral figures are carved for a specific purpose and personify an ancestral spirit. This figure's long hair tresses suggest that a person of high rank is represented. the exaggerated features like the bulging eyes and the protruding tongue show strength and forcefulness. (VJ)
